JOHN STANNARD

1843–1909

John Stannard was titled as “Keeper of the Ponds” and worked with Superintendent William Ramsbottom from the very first day. Stannard took over from Ramsbottom upon his untimely death in 1868 and held that position until 1888. Stannard’s Cottage is named after him. His son Henry then took his place until his early death in 1891 at the age of 24. Although his position as superintendent is hard to verify, he fulfilled all duties associated with that position and received the sum of £91 per annum. Most of the highland lakes were stocked under his stewardship with the first being Lake Echo in 1869. Great Lake followed in 1870, closely followed by Gunns, Blue and Sandy lakes. During this period lakes Sorell and Crescent were also stocked. He was considered a pioneer in stocking regimes.
