RICHARD FRANCIS IRVINE
1845–1921
Irvine was a Northern Member of the Fisheries Commission from 1895 to 1921. He was the instigator in the formation of the Northern Tasmanian Fisheries Association in 1898 and served as Chairman until 1920. Irvine worked tirelessly to establish fish stocking programmes for the Northern Rivers. He also involved himself in the stockings, releasing various classes of fish from fry, fingerlings, and larger specimens. He was made a life member of the Northern Tasmanian Fisheries Association for his services to the fishery and for securing the land needed for the development of the Waverley hatchery.
