WILLIAM THOMAS CRAMP
1849–1935
‘W.T.’, as he was known, was regarded as the ‘Father of Fishing’ in Southern Tasmania. He was a member of the Fisheries Board and later the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Commission from 1919 until 1931. He was the instigator and a builder of the hatchery named in his honour at Mountain Creek, Lake Sorell. A cairn was erected near the boarding house at Interlaken, Lake Sorell, by the Southern Tasmanian Licensed Anglers’ Association in 1934 in recognition of his services to angling. W.T. was a major driving force in rearing young trout and stocking local waters. A son, Harry, served on the Commission from 1926 until 1949, being the Chairman from 1926 until 1947. Another son, Harold, was also a Commissioner from 1932 to 1935 while grandson, George, served on the Commission from 1950 until 1954. All served on the Committee of the Southern Tasmanian Licensed Anglers’ Association.
