WILLIAM RAMSBOTTOM

1833–1868

The first Superintendent of the Salmon Ponds, a position he held from 1864 until 1868. He travelled from England on the ‘Norfolk’ in 1864 and tended the ova on the long voyage from England to Tasmania. Responsible for assisting with the first hatching of salmon and trout in the Southern Hemisphere. Distributed fry statewide, also developed methods for stripping trout in the wild.
